Basing his remarks on the story of doubting Thomas as found in John 20, Isaac Villegas, guest preacher at Park View Mennonite (Harrisonburg, VA), reminded his listeners that while we like to think of the “transfigured Jesus” as our inspiration, we need to, like Thomas, put our hands into his side and enter into his suffering. “We’d rather not talk about the hell in our lives,” he further instructed, “but that is where Jesus went–into hell for us.” What is the hell in Harrisonburg? he asked, “does it have an address here?” Isaac Villegas is the pastor of Chapel Hill (NC) Mennonite Fellowship.

Wholeness is not a prize to be earned and won, Phil Kniss, lead pastor at the Park View Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, VA, told his congregation, but rather, “it is a gift of God to be received.” Basing his remarks on the ancient story of Naaman, commander of the army of King Aram, receiving healing from his leprosy only after yielding to the simple instructions of the prophet Elisha, Kniss insisted there is a powerful connection between yieldedness and wholeness, between releasing and healing, between letting go and dropping our obsessions and anxieties and receiving God’s pure gift of wholeness of life.
