We have many things to worry about, Barbara Moyer Lehman, associate pastor at Park View Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, VA, told her listeners on the subject: “Paying attention to the right things”–death of a friend, loss of a job, disappointment in family members, including our children. But Jesus tells us in Matthew 6, not to worry about these things, even such mundane things as what we will eat, or drink, what we will wear. He pointed to the birds and flowers who are cared for on a daily basis, even flaunting their non-caring with plumage and beautiful blossoms.

At Park View Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, VA, Pastor Phil Kniss gave this sermon (occasioned by the 55th anniversary of the congregation, the 12th anniversary of Phil’s pastorate at Park View, and the beginning of a 3-month sabbatical study leave), in which he reflected on the “missional vocation” of the church, and shared a vision for Park View actively encouraging the development of missional communities in the life of the congregation.

Describing the ubiquitous nature of power, Phil Kniss, senior pastor of Park View Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, VA, told his parishioners in the last Sunday of Easter, that the power of Pentecost is counter-cultural and something bigger than ourselves. Many of us live a self-oriented life with a thin Christian overlay, with a kind of generic power source, but the power the committed Christian uses is the one that carries out the spirit of Jesus–an itinerant prophet/preacher. Yes, we have unlimited power to model Jesus but not the kind that manipulates God for our own self-advancement.
